Other Programs - Debating & Public Speaking

Beecroft Primary School values public oratory and is well known in educational circles for its ground breaking work in the teaching of public speaking and debating and for its consistent representation in regional and state finals in competition.

At Beecroft all students in stages 2 and 3 enjoy a weekly formal lesson in public speaking and all of these students undergo two formal assessments a year. There are intra-school competitions - The Year 6 Competition, sponsored by Rotary, and the Multi-Cultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition, the Apex Public Speaking and the Premier’s Debating Challenge. In 2005, Beecroft students became state champions in both the Apex and the Premier's Challenge. In 2006 Beecroft were Regional runners-up and in 2007 were Regional winners and State runners up. Over past years many Beecroft debaters have been selected in the Sydney North Team for the NSW Primary Schools' State Debating Championship.

The true benefit in the teaching of public speaking is not however for the competition winners. It is for every student who learns this incredibly important life skill, and takes it with them to secondary and tertiary level, job interviews, the work place, and life in general.
